Coworking is: Social, energetic, creative, productive, functional,…!

Can you complete the list? The aspects above are taken out of Rachel Botsman´s article “Working alone and together” published yesterday. She describes coworking spaces as follows: “The spaces themselves vary in terms of perks and culture, but they are all based on combining the best elements of a coffee shop (social, energetic, creative) and the best elements of a workspace (productive, functional).” While catchy, to me, this reads more like “selling” coworking (please excuse Rachel), rather than explaining coworking (which everyone knows, is not easy). I believe it is useful to combine the “outside view” (the description of what we see) with an “inside view” (an analysis of the motivation and vision) for coworking. The “coworking community values” could present such an “inside view” namely: Collaboration, Openness, Community, Accessibility and Sustainability. Or maybe, there is something in between, as Rachel Botsman quotes Dominique Cardon and Christoph Aguiton: “Coworking creates a “third place.” “Something which is neither a desk in a company nor the domicile of the person; it is a kind of public place you can join when you want, with the guarantee of finding some social life and the chance of a useful exchange.” I guess, in the end, coworking definitions are as individual, as every individual is unique. To me, that is what makes coworking so exciting.
